Amino Energy Review: Are Optimum Nutrition onto a Winner?

Iimage showing a man faxing his biceps

While there are many outstanding bcaa supplements on the market, there aren't many that are as notorious as Amino Energy. We rate it as one of the best supplements to take before training too.

And soon, you'll learn why…

Rich in amino acid and naturally sources caffeine, ON Amino Energy, fights against fatigue by stimulating your nervous system and protecting against muscle loss by shuttling amino acids into the bloodstream.

Our full Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy review covers all the ins and outs that you could possibly want to know. One of the most significant aspects of the supplement is the fact that it is not just a bcaa, it can easily double up as an effective pre-workout supplement, potentially replacing it all together.

Amino Energy Ingredients And Nutrition Facts

The formula is broken down into two main subsections, each of which caters to a different element of athletic performance. The first blend consists of 14 micronized amino acids, which take care of the muscle growth and recovery side of training.

The second cocktail of ingredients is used to increase energy and is the reason why so many gym goers choose to use this as their pre-workout supplement.

As this is mostly an amino acid supplement, let's take a look at the benefits and drawbacks of the amino blend first. Afterward, I'll explain all the things that the energy blend can do for your strength, productivity, and focus.

Pros and Cons of the Amino Blend

Fourteen. That's the number of amino acids in this five-gram blend. At a glance, this may seem like the most compelling feature, but do you really need that many amino acids?

I'll put it to you like this, with protein, which we use for building muscle, more amino acids are better because for protein to be even called protein, it needs to have all 20 amino acids.

While Amino Energy can definitely double-up as your pre-workout powder, It would be good if Optimum told is the precise amount of BCAAs.

However, with free-form amino acids like Amino Energy, we don't need all of the amino acids.

BCAAs are the most important, which is a little bit of a problem because ON don't tell us how much of the Amino Blend consists of BCAAs.

Yet, at the same time, having such a breadth of amino acids is beneficial, because each plays a different role in health, physical performance, and muscle growth.

One trick I have tried to make sure I'm getting enough BCAAs from Amino Energy is to take 2+ servings. This serving size doubles up as my pre-workout and gives me a free-form amino boost that lasts well into my long training sessions.

The Energy Blend

The 100 mg of caffeine from green tea and green coffee extract acts as the fuel to your fire by giving you an energy boost without making you feel overstimulated or jittery.

Depending on your reasons for using it though, you may want to use more or less powder. For example, if you just want a pleasant boost in focus, then there's no need to take more than a serving.

On the other hand, if you know that a grueling workout awaits you at the gym, then taking up to 3 scoops will give you as much bang as any of the top pre-workouts.

Taking a higher dose than one scoop bulks up the amino acid content considerably which is great in and of itself. However, it's a problem for those who want extra aminos but aren't too keen on stimulants.

Benefits And Effectiveness

As one of the most energetic bcaa supplements on the shelves, you are sure to feel the benefits from your very first serving. As a scientifically-tested stimulant, the naturally-sourced caffeine begins working rapidly, which has a nice effect on your mental performance and physical energy.

Amino Energy contains sought-after amino acids like glutamine and citrulline, which have been studied intensely for years, showing good potential for repairing damaged muscle tissue.

Go ahead and give Amino Energy a try for yourself if you are interested in an intra-workout than can also be your pre-workout.

How to Correctly Use

The first time you use it, mix one serving (2 scoops) with 10-12 oz of water to assess your tolerance.

You can also drink up to 3 servings (6 scoops) for 15g of aminos and 300 mg of caffeine.

When To Take Amino Energy

As both an energy supplement and amino acid powder, there are many times during your day when Amino Energy has its advantages.

Using it pre-workout will do two things:

  1. Prevents muscle catabolism that is a result of hard exercise
  2. Gives you an energy boost that's similar to the feeling you get from pre-workouts

Using it as a morning pick-me-up is a great alternative to coffee and doesn't require any added milk or sugar for it to taste just right. It is also good to use between meals when you have a reduced supply of essential amino acids.

I would avoid taking it too close to bedtime because as the label says, the supplement does contain caffeine which can make it hard to fall asleep.

Servings, Sizes, And Scoop

Amino Energy is available in two standard sizes, 30 servings, and 65 servings. Each scoop of powder weighs 9g when measured correctly, which is more concentrated than supplements like Xtend and Amino x.

What Flavors Can You Buy?

The 10+ flavors are basically split into 2 camps:

  • Fruity Flavors
  • Coffee-house style flavors

If you're a fan of pre-workout supplements like me, go with the fruity flavors. But if coffee is always featured in your daily routine, give the coffee-house flavors a whirl for a different kind of pre or intra-workout drink.

Product Variations

Being so well-received in the fitness community, the internationally recognized supplement is available in 4 varieties which I've shared with you below.

The Regular Formula

Go with the regular formula if you want the best value option with a good number of servings.

Ready To Drink

If you like you shakes on-the-go then Amino Energy RTD is the choice for you. With a single pack containing 12 bottles, you won't run out in a hurry either.

Plus Electrolytes

If you are a runner or really intense exerciser, then go with Amino Energy Plus Electrolytes. You will maintain better hydration while still feeling the pleasant increase in energy levels that this product is known for..

Although it is a really popular supplement among fitness enthusiasts, it is not for everyone, especially if you are only looking for BCAAs.

Is It A Good Pre Workout?

While not strictly a pre-workout, there's a lot of overlap. For instance, it includes caffeine, citrulline, and beta-alanine, which are all typical pre-workout ingredients.

Is This A BCAA?

No, this is not a pure bcaa supplement. There are 11 other amino acids as well.

Is It Good For Intermittent Fasting?

Being only 10 calories, this is definitely an excellent supplement to accompany intermittent fasting. The caffeine increases focus and diverts attention away from hunger while the aminos will fight against protein breakdown.

Why Take This Over Coffee?

It's lower in calories and is way better for building muscle. That said, if you drink coffee for taste as well as for caffeine, then this can't replace it. Hope that helps.

Overall Review

Overall, it is an excellent supplement with the capability to build muscle and increase pre-workout energy levels. We think it has just the right amount of caffeine for day-to-day workouts, and with such refreshing flavors, it doesn't become just another part of the daily grind.

Although the stimulants aren't for everyone, we liked the fact the caffeine is naturally sourced. It can also comfortably replace your pre-workout which makes it very reasonable value for money.

So, if you're ready to take the leap and try more uplifting bcaas, you won't be sorry to go with ON Amino Energy.

I hope our Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy Review helped you along the way. Hopefully, all of your questions have been covered, and you know whether it's a good fit for you.
