BSN True Mass Review: Great Taste But How are the Ingredients & What are the Benefits?

Founded in 2001, Bio-Engineered supplements, who are more commonly known in the supplement industry as "BSN," make a massive range of sports nutrition products and are probably best known for their signature protein powder Syntha-6.

But today, we're turning up the calories all the way to 700 by bringing you a full BSN True Mass review, to see if it's a good fit for your next bulking regime. They also make another weight gainer — True Mass 1200 — but we prefer the regular product.

And you'll soon find out why.

True Mass Nutrition Facts

BSN's signature weight gainer checks in at respectable 700 total calories. The mass gain mixture consists of protein (46-50g) from 7 different sources, carbohydrates (87g) from maltodextrin, and fats (18g), which includes MCT powder.

The exact amount of protein can differ, for example, the Chocolate Milkshake flavor has 46g, whereas the Strawberry Milkshake and Vanilla Ice Cream options have a rounded 50g per serving.

Protein Blend

I stuck with Chocolate Milkshake, because having tried it in Syntha-6, I wanted a flavor I knew I would like.

More on that later.

Only 5 of the 18g of fats are saturated, and only 16% of the carbohydrates are sugars. Making up the rest of the nutrition label is a fantastic 40% of the RDI for calcium and phosphorus, as well as 30% of the RDI for magnesium, and 20% for minerals iron and potassium.

How Do The Ingredients Work?

Boasting a legitimate 2:1 carb to protein ratio, BSN True Mass lays the macronutrient foundations for a successful bulking regime. While other gainers require you to guzzle carbs in their hundreds for a measly portion of protein, True Mass lets you enjoy a 46g minimum dose for every 87g of energizing carbohydrates.

BSN achieve this in two ways. On the protein side of things, they combine the best fast and slow digesting proteins available into one mixture, which produces superior muscle growth compared to just a fast-acting protein source, like whey. In fact, True Mass contains 3 unique types of whey, including rapidly digested isolates and hydrolysates, making it an effective post-workout shake.

As for the carbs, BSN utilizes maltodextrin to fuel workouts, and contribute to a calorie surplus fit for weight gain. While not the most nutritionally-packed carb source, maltodextrin is extremely easy to consume in high quantities, making it an ideal ingredient for those who have a hard time adding mass through their day-to-day diets.

Who Can Benefit From Using It?

Whether you are looking to size up your physique seriously, or just make life with a fast metabolism less of a strain, BSN True Mass can help you gain weight effectively, when used with a healthy diet and targeted exercise regime.

However, those who will get the most from this supplement, are those who primarily exercise with weights or body weight, and who are looking for muscle growth in particular.

By displaying some grit in the weight room, a more substantial proportion of the weight you gain will be lean muscle mass. If you decide to hit the treadmill more than the squat rack, then the calories will be used for recovery and glycogen replenishment.

You can still grow muscle with cardio, but not to the same extent as you would by lifting heavy iron.

So, if you are seeking extra mass on your body, and more weight on the scales, then you may well benefit from taking True Mass regularly, and especially after your workout.

How To Use It Properly

  • Mix 3 scoops (165g) with 16 oz of cold water, or a beverage of your choice.
  • Try milk if you want it to taste more like a milkshake
  • Or stick with water if you prefer things milder

When To Take True Mass To Help Gain Weight

At the end of the day, the total number of calories is what determines whether or not you gain weight. However, you can maximize the amount of muscle you build, by strategically timing True Mass around the anabolic window.

This window of opportunity is not a 30-minute timeframe like you might have heard some people say. In fact, it's length is not the same for everyone. The more advanced your muscle development is the shorter your window of opportunity.

In practice, post-workout and before bed are likely the 2 best times to take BSN True Mass. Why?

Let me explain. Tiresome training depletes the body's energy reservoirs and creates a whole heap of damage within the muscles. Both of these increase the demand for protein and carbs. When you supply this demand, you can be relatively sure you're doing everything you can at that moment to grow muscle and gain weight.

As for bedtime, this is the time when your body makes the physique changes before you see them in the mirror. So, if it's a rest day for you, take True Mass before going to bed, and enjoy the feeling of a more substantial morning weigh in.

Sizes, Servings, And Scoop

It is available in a 5.8 pound tub which has 16 servings at the full dose. One serving consists of 3 scoops and weighs around 165g in total, with each scoop being just over 50g in weight.

Taste, Flavors, And Mixability

You can pick one of four flavors, which are Chocolate Milkshake, Cookies and Cream, Strawberry Milkshake, and Vanilla Ice Cream.

Being a chocolate fanatic, it was only right that I went with Chocolate Milkshake, and having tried it recently in Syntha-6, I was curious if the taste was as good in their mass gainer.

This is for the regular 700 calories True Mass. BSN also make a shake called “True Mass 1200”, which I've been told doesn't taste as good, but have not tried it myself, I can't give my opinion.

But as for the regular True Mass, it is comfortably the best tasting mass gainer I've ever tried (so far). I'm not going to sit here and pretend it tasted exactly like a chocolate milkshake, but it's the closest any gainer has come, and I've tried a lot of weight gainers in my time.

For whatever reason, BSN seems to have a knack for developing flavors that really hit the spot. And as for mixability, being a modest 700 calories, It mixed fine in a traditional shaker bottle, just be sure to use enough liquid if you don't like it too thick.
