MusclePharm Assault Pre Workout Review: Side Effects + Are the Ingredients Good for Athletes?

Image of a muscular man flipping a tire

Assault pre workout is a performance and energy complex that says no thank you to proprietary blends, favoring Informed-Choice certified ingredients in their supplement formula.

The product focuses on 3 main elements; energy, strength, and performance, which are critical aspects of lots of different sports and exercises. Assault, is not limited to athletes, nor weightlifters, anyone who exercises and is seeking more energy in their workouts can benefit from it.

As you'll soon find out in our MusclePharm Assault Review.

The scoop size is tiny and the powder extremely fine, which significantly aids in mixability. The comprehensive ingredient list means that only one serving is necessary to enjoy its full effects for yourself. An exciting ingredient is acetyl l-carnitine which can boost focus, to improve your mental game as well as physical.

Assault Pre Workout Ingredients And Nutrition Facts

MP Assault splits its formula into 3 cocktails of ingredients, each of which caters to a different aspect of training.

For example, the energy and focus blend is designed to elevate your mental game. Conversely, the strength and performance blend, including betaine (500mg) and beta-alanine (1.6g) helps improve your physical attributes. There is also a "muscle fuel" blend of taurine (500mg) and glycine (500 mg) which we weren't as keen on, as you'll find out in just a minute...

Vitamins B6, B12, C, and E all feature on the nutrition label in doses that wouldn't look out of place in a multivitamin. They aren't going have you breaking any personal bests, but they do perform many vital functions, and our need for them increases when we exercise.

Now, let's take a look at how these ingredients work for your body.

How Does MP Assault Work?

Beta-alanine and creatine monohydrate offer many benefits to an athlete's body but are very hard to get in our regular diets.

Creatine is naturally found in red meat, fish, and poultry, but getting it through a supplement like Assault is much more convenient.

Many people use beta-alanine because they like the tingling sensation it gives them, but what many don't realize is that it has endurance-boosting properties.

Many of our favorite beverages are abundant in caffeine and can be used to increase energy. While drinking a pre-workout coffee may seem like a good idea, the benefits of caffeine are greatly enhanced with other nutrients such as betaine, acetyl l-carnitine, and taurine.

Acetyl l-carnitine (not to be confused with regular l-carnitine) supports the effects of caffeine by improving both your mood and memory. It is sought-after because of the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, improving mental performance.

By increasing relaxation, the amino acid taurine can counteract some of the jitters, which may be caused by caffeine.

There is also 500 mg of glycine, an amino acid which can have advantages for your body including better sleep. That said, we would have liked to see BCAAs and Citrulline rather than glycine or taurine because they are better for recovery from athletic performance.

Benefits And Effectiveness

Anyone who plays sports or exercises can benefit from MusclePharm Assault pre workout.

However, those who will enjoy the dynamic effects the most, are those who need to be at peak performance during exercise. Lack of energy before an important sporting event or key workout results in unpredictable performance, which is not ideal for reliable results.

Also, as the season progresses or your workout protocol peaks, low motivation due to tiredness and fatigue can begin to show in your performances. If this sounds like something you've experienced, you might want to use an Informed-Choice certified pre-workout like MP Assault when you need the boost.

How to Use and When to Take

Prepare 8-12 oz of cold water and mix in 1 scoop of powder. Drink 20 to 30 minutes before training or an event and don't take more than one serving a day as it's a powerful supplement.

To keep the powder in good shape, we recommend that you store it away from direct sources of heat and light. Keep the lid firmly sealed and in a cool, dry place.

Sizes, Servings, and Scoop

The 222g tub comes with 30 servings. The scoop is relatively small in size, and the powder weighs around 7.5 grams when measured out.

Side-Effects And Disadvantages

One side effect which may be very noticeable for some people is the beta alanine tingles. This is a harmless sensation and is actually a good indicator that the supplement contains the beta-alanine that it claims.

The most compelling disadvantage in our opinion is the lack of bcaas and citrulline malate, which are both excellent ingredients for muscle recovery.

That said, those who prefer to take their bcaas intra-workout will be glad that MP Assault doesn't contain any. And if you do want to try out citrulline, then MusclePharm Wreckage has 5g of it.

Flavors and Taste

Assault pre-workout doesn't have a massive range of tastes like some other supplements, but their Fruit Punch flavor tastes much better than when I tried the old version of the formula, many years ago.

It's worth noting that it uses both natural and artificial sweeteners, namely sucralose and acesulfame potassium which do have a particular taste that not all users are fond of.

Here are the questions that we see most frequently asked when people are wondering whether or not MP Assault is good pre workout for them.

Does MusclePharm Assault Have Creatine?

Yes, there is 1.5g of creatine monohydrate per scoop. It's certainly on the lower side, but you could just subtract It from your daily dose.

How Much Caffeine Is There?

The caffeine content is 200 mg per serving, a very reasonable amount but not so much that you feel overwhelmed.

Why Does It Make Me Itch?

The tingling sensation is due to the beta alanine contained in the supplement. It is not harmful and has even been recognized in the 2012 scientific study. You may notice a tingle soon after taking Assault (before the caffeine kicks in) and may forget it's there as it begins to wear off gradually.

Does It Make You Gain Weight?

There are no ingredients that would cause you to gain fat. However, it does contain a small amount of creatine which does make your body retain water. Note, water retention is not body fat.

How Long Will It Last Me For?

It depends on how often you take it. But let's say you use it 3x a week. At the full dose, it would last you for 10 weeks. One tub has 30 servings, which takes a while to burn through when using it sensibly.

Is This A Stimulant?

Yes, Assault pre-workout contains caffeine which is a natural stimulant.

Overall Review

This is an excellent supplement in many ways. Boosting energy and performance with natural stimulants, MP Assault is enjoyed by athletes seeking a safe and tested pre workout powder.

A supplement that has been banned substance tested and certified by Informed Choice, it is an excellent option for those who want reliable ingredients.

We really do rate this supplement! We do believe that compared to some other pre-workouts like Legion Pulse, it may fall short in some areas. Undoubtedly, Legion Athletics offer a stronger pre-workout with the bonus of citrulline malate.

But that doesn't reduce the effectiveness of this supplement, especially for those who know that too much caffeine will negatively affect their performance. If you are looking for a tested, athlete-friendly supplement that you can use pre-game or in the gym, give Assault a try and see what it can do for you.

Hopefully, you found our MusclePharm Assault review helpful, we hope that it made deciding which pre  workout supplement to use a bit easier.
