Xtend BCAA is an international recognized intra-workout catalyst made to reduce muscle damage, increase growth, and improve hydration. Scivation is a brand that backs their formula as one of the best on the market, but how did it fair when we tried it?
You will quickly be in the know…
One of the most compelling features is its blend of three amino acids; glutamine, citrulline malate, and branched chain aminos. These components work together to improve performance from all angles, adding up to a strong 10.5g in total.
Our full Scivation Xtend BCAA review tests the supplement across critical categories that you would want to know about before using it.
Xtend BCAA Ingredients And Nutritional Info
Scivation offers a diverse range of ingredients inside their signature Xtend formula, but since it's primarily a bcaa, that's what I'm going to talk about first.
As you can see on the nutrition label, each dosage is specified which is really helpful for knowing exactly how much you're taking.
Honest BCAA Blend
The reason why I call these bcaas "honest" is not that they're a magical cure-all, but because Scivation tells us exactly how much of each amino acid is in the powder. If you've ever tried Amino x or Amino Energy, you'll know that neither BSN nor ON does this.
While you may be aware of the advantages of bcaas for muscle growth, you may not know that you need them in the 2:1:1 ratio for you to get the most gains. This is because it's the ratio that's been studied the most. Other ratios like 3:1:2 might work, but until we know more, 2:1:1 remains the golden ratio for growing muscle.
In Xtend, Scivation doesn't just chuck in a few grams of bcaas to satisfy the nutrition label, they dose their amino acids generously so that you only need to take one scoop to reap the rewards.
The powerhouse amino leucine checks in at 3.5g and the others — isoleucine and valine — contribute 1.75g each to the impressive 7g total.
Glutamine And Citrulline Malate: Recovery And Pumps
Scivation Xtend has a simple ingredient list compared to most supplements.
Incorporating, l-glutamine and citrulline malate, the two of these nutrients combine together to produce physical results. Glutamine is a building block of protein and is useful for digestion issues and exercise performance.
Citrulline malate is an ingredient which naturally stimulates nitric oxide production. It has been shown to reduce muscle damage and increase work capacity as well, which makes citrulline a good supporting element.
Many bodybuilders also report experiencing better pumps when taking citrulline.
Electrolyte Blend And Vitamins
Being both sugar and calorie-free, Xtend is the perfect drink for pre, post, and intra-workout hydration. Electrolytes are often overlooked but are actually really important.
They help your nervous system to function as it's designed to, while also assisting muscles to contract, which is crucial for all types of exercise.
Benefits And Effectiveness
After using Xtend many times myself, I'm going to share with you what you can expect when you take the supplement consistently.
Faster Recovery from Muscle Damage
Commonly called DOMS, muscle damage is that uncomfortable feeling you get in the belly of your muscles in the days following a hard weightlifting session.
Xtend helps you to recover more rapidly by sending a signal to your cells to start protein synthesis, which promotes healing and growth of muscle tissue.
For the fastest possible recovery though, it's crucial to take Xtend around your workout and in the anabolic window.
More on nutrient timing in a minute.
Better Intra-Workout Hydration
Electrolytes such as sodium are critical for proper hydration. And with intra-workout is the prime time when we lose these vital minerals through sweat, they’re really important.
With fatigue being the most common side effect of electrolyte imbalances it's essential to keep stores replenished. They also serve muscles by helping them contract, which a critical factor in all types of exercise, resistance, and cardio based.
How To Use
Mix one scoop with roughly 8 oz to 16 oz of water. Xtend is quite sweet, and users do complain about this so you might want to use more water if you're not used to such a sweet taste.
Mix two scoop for intra workout and use one scoop between meals for non-training days.
When To Take Xtend
For best results, the directions recommend to consume it while you are training. I agree, and I would add that drinking extra servings in the anabolic window is a good strategy for recovery.
The anabolic window peaks in the hours after training but can last days. It's the process where damaged muscles are repaired, and signals are sent for them to grow bigger if enough amino acids are present.
On non-training days, take it between meals.
What Flavors Are Available?
I don't know a bcaa supplement with a more sizable choice of flavors than Xtend. I'd be lying if I said I've tried them all, but I have tried a fair few, so here are my recommendations and personal preferences:
- Lemon Lime
- Pink lemonade
- Blue Raspberry
- Green Apple
- Strawberry Kiwi
There are loads more flavors than this, these are just the ones that I've tried and can vouch for, except the strawberry which I wasn't so keen on. I was most surprised with Pink Lemonade which along with Watermelon was definitely my favorite.
Here's a full list of the other flavors
- Blood Orange
- Freedom Ice
- Fruit Punch
- Pina Colada
- Raw (unflavored)
- Strawberry mango
Sizes, Servings, And Scoop
Scivation's signature product is available for purchase in 3 different sizes
- 20 servings
- 30 servings
- 90 servings
If you're not sure which flavor you like or want to mix and match, I recommend choosing a smaller tub. As for the scoop size, it's 13.86g when weighed out correctly. But I don't think you need to weigh it unless you just enjoy being precise.
Which Version Should I Buy?
Glutamine, citrulline, & Electrolytes
30 or 90
Citrulline Malate & Beta-Alanine
Fat Loss Support
Carnitine & CLA
Caffeine & L-Theanine
30 or 90
Those Who Avoid Artificial Sweeteners
Glutamine & Citrulline Malate
For all-around performance and value, go with the regular product. If you are seeking a 2-in-1 pre-workout and intra workout supplement then give Xtend Go a whirl. It has 200 mg of caffeine which is equal to many popular pre-workout supplements.
If you're more interested in weight loss, but don't want a bunch of stimulants making you feel jittery, then the best choice is Xtend Ripped which replenishes electrolytes and supports fat loss.
Don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners? Then go with Xtend Free which has absolutely no artificial colors, flavor, or sweeteners, and has just as many bcaas as the original formula.
If you train for endurance, then give Xtend Elite a try. It has 1.6 grams of beta-alanine to help buffer lactic acid on long runs or bike rides. There's also 3x as much citrulline malate as the original formula which has been shown to both reduce muscle soreness and boost work capacity. Warning though, it's not the cheapest.
Finally, if you're a competitive athlete and want to make sure you're on the right side of the regulations, then Hydrasport is the best bet as it carries an NSF certified for sport badge.

What's The Dose For Off Days?

Should I Buy This Or Whey Protein?
Whey protein is very different to Xtend. The perks of bcaas are that they're free-form which means they're absorbed faster. It's why they're usually taken intra-workout.
If you're on a budget though, and can only afford one, go with a whey protein that has all the amino acids.
Is It Good For Running?
Yes, Xtend is advantageous for runners looking to recover quicker. One thing to note though is timing. I recommend taking xtend before and after rather than during if you usually have a carb-drink mid-run.
Overall, Xtend is an excellent amino acid supplement, offering much more than your standard product. We rated it as the #1 BCAA supplement this year, and with a lot of competition from the likes of Amino x and Alpha Amino, it is a testament to the quality of the ingredients.
Whether you are looking to build a sizable amount of muscle mass, or just feel better during your workouts, Xtend is one intra-workout supplement we wouldn't hit the gym without.
Give it a try for yourself to see it's advantages for hydration, muscle growth, and soreness reduction.
If you're not sure which flavor is going to hit the spot for you, then go for the 30 serving tub rather than the 90 serving option. This way you can mix and match to see which you find the most refreshing to drink.
