Now, you might think that creatine is entirely flavorless and odorless. So why am I talking about taste here?

Well, flavored creatine is often used in hardgainer formulas, where that the creatine is mixed with other ingredients, meaning we need a flavor to mask the taste.

For those who just use regular monohydrate though, taste is not a concern for you.

Is it Stackable?

The point of a supplement stack is to use products that each perform different functions. Because of this, you don't want too much crossover. For example, if your pre-workout already has 5g of creatine, you certainly don't need to take any creatine separately that day. Unless of course, you're loading.

But with creatine, you hardly ever have to worry about stackability. That is unless you opt for flavored creatine. Flavored supplements are notoriously difficult to mix together because there's a high chance of ‘flavor clash' — yes, I made that up.

Doing this will often ruin the flavor of both supplements. Quite ironically, this defeats the purpose of buying a flavored version in the first place.

That's why I mostly recommend unflavored creatine unless you are using a hardgainer formula, for example.

As for the best time to take it, some say just take it when you can, which is undoubtedly better than not taking it all. That said, it is not the best solution. For maximum results, creatine is best-taken post-workout.

A study from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition showed that subjects who took their creatine after training rather than before gained double the amount of fat-free mass.

Micronized Creatine

Micronized creatine might sound like a new form of creatine, but it is merely a purer version of regular monohydrate with better absorption. In general it is more expensive, but in our experience it is worth is as the better digestibility may prevent some of the bloating.

Creatine HCL

Creatine Hydrochloride is one of the most popular creatine supplements available. While not as researched as monohydrate, it is thought lower doses may be used to gain comparable effects.

For most people, I recommend just using plain monohydrate. Alternatively, a formula that combines both HCL and monohydrate could be a smart idea. In this scenario, the monohydrate would "cover your bases" while the HCL may potentially act in a way monohydrate does not.

Ethyl Ester

Ethyl Ester — or EE for short — is an alternative form of creatine that's thought to have higher bioavailability than regular monohydrate. But this is not the case.

Don't waste your money on this stuff because as the research shows, regular creatine monohydrate is more useful for improving body composition, strength and muscle mass.
